Types of Searches

Sourcingurus operates under three primary types of search models, which are differentiated by how the agency is paid, the level of exclusivity, and the depth of the search process.

 Retained Search

  • How it works: The client pays a fee in advance (usually split into installments like 1/3 upfront, 1/3 at candidate presentation, and 1/3 upon placement) and grants the agency exclusive rights to fill the role.

  • Best used for: Senior-level executive, C-suite, highly specialized, or confidential positions where quality and discretion outweigh speed.

  • Key feature: The Retained Search model treats the recruiter as a dedicated partner who manages the entire vetting and negotiation process.

Contingent Search

  • How it works: The agency is only paid a fee or commission if they successfully place a candidate who gets hired and passes a specified guarantee period.

  • Best used for: Mid-level, permanent, or high-volume roles that are easier to source and where companies want to cast a wide net.

  • Key feature: Often non-exclusive, meaning a company can engage multiple agencies simultaneously to race for the same placement.

Contained (or Engaged Exclusive) Search

  • How it works: A hybrid model where the client pays a small upfront engagement or retainer fee (typically a fraction of the total cost) to secure dedicated priority and resources, with the remaining balance paid only upon a successful hire.

  • Best used for: Mid-to-senior management roles or mid-sized companies needing a balance between commitment and financial flexibility.

  • Key feature: Gives the recruiting firm skin in the game while prioritizing the client higher than a standard contingent setup.
